9th grade English focuses on the topics of Human Nature and Identity. Some Essential Questions we will be exploring and discussing throughout the year are:
How does our journey shape our identity?
How does a character’s journey influence the human identity?
How does the author use literary devices to convey her/his message?
What is the significance of archetypes in literature?
How do these archetypes help us understand human nature?
2019-2020 Assigned Reading
The below are the texts we will potentially cover this year. We will not be reading all of these texts. Feel free to purchase these texts if you prefer to have your own copy.
Short Stories - Various authors
The House on Mango Street - Sandra Cisneros
Anthem - Ayn Rand (9th)
Romeo and Juliet - William Shakespeare
In addition to these titles, students will read various nonfiction texts, poems, and other works that complement the themes, concepts, and ides in our main texts.
In addition to assigned reading, students should be conducting Outside Reading. Outside Reading are books of students' choice that they will be reading both in and outside of class throughout the year. The books should be appropriate (many books are available in my Class Library and the CVHS Library, and I encourage you to discuss their books with them), and enjoyable. This assignment is intended to cultivate a love for independent reading and boost reading, vocabulary, critical thinking, and language skills. Students have my permission to stop reading an Outside Reading book if they are not enjoying it and pick a new book! Their Outside Reading book should be brought to class daily.
